Cameron lives and travels full time in his RV with his wife, daughter, and dog. He had struggled with bad teeth for as long as he could remember — a result of both genetics and neglect. After receiving quotes totaling around $30,000 from two California dentists, he decided there had to be another way. Within four days of discovering dental tourism, he was on a plane to Mexico. Here is his story.
Q: Please give us an overview of how and when you made the decision to utilize medical tourism for your procedure. What made you choose Mexico as your destination?
In the midst of a front tooth breaking apart, I realized it was finally time to get my teeth worked on. As many people do, I had pushed it aside for as long as possible. After getting two quotes from dentists in Central California, I began searching Google for more affordable options. That’s when I came across dental tourism. Being in California at the time, I decided to look into facilities in Mexico.
Q: Was this your first medical tourism trip? How did you prepare for your journey?
Within days of finding out that dental tourism existed, I was on a plane and in the dentist’s chair in Mexico — all within four days. The only thing I needed to send prior to my appointment was my current X-rays, which served as the consultation so the dentist could assess my teeth before I arrived. Thankfully, I had just received X-rays from an American dentist, so all I had to do was sign a medical release form to have them faxed to Mexico.
Q: How did you choose your dentist?
I used a third-party website, Dental Departures, which lists facilities along with reviews. I did my research on their site, narrowed it down, and then searched elsewhere to verify that the reviews were organic. They were, and my decision was made.
Q: How was the cleanliness and appearance of the dental clinic? How was the staff?
The cleanliness was on par with what you would expect in the US. They had up-to-date equipment and their staff was knowledgeable and kind throughout the entire process.
Q: Did you travel with a companion? If so, what were the benefits?
I did not — I was a solo traveler. I never once felt there was a safety issue, though I wouldn’t necessarily say solo travel is the best approach. It’s doable, but having a companion would have been helpful.
Q: How did the dental care compare to the US?
For one, if I had stayed in the US, the treatment would have taken more than three times as long. In the US, they would have had to send out for my crowns, whereas the practice in Los Algodones makes them on site. The equipment and knowledge of the staff were very comparable to what you would find in a US dental office.

Q: Did the language barrier impact your trip in any way?
Not at all. Everyone I spoke with at the dental office, the hotels, and the restaurants all spoke and understood English.
Q: Did you have any fears or concerns about receiving dental care in Mexico?
Initially, yes — though it was more a fear of the unknown than a legitimate concern. Traveling for dental work was still a new concept to me, and I was also immersing myself in an unfamiliar culture on top of the dental work itself. On the other side of it, I am very thankful I didn’t let that fear stop me from going.
Q: Was there any difference in hospitality between the US and Mexico?
You do have to realize that medical and dental tourism is becoming increasingly popular, and because Mexico is so close to the US, many people are traveling there for major work. What this means is that you need to do your research to find the right fit. For example, some facilities had high ratings but were known for making patients feel like cattle being moved through a factory. That wasn’t what I wanted, so I specifically chose a practice that would take intentional time with me.
Q: Did you feel safe at your hotel and the surrounding areas?
Absolutely. There was never a moment where I felt safety was an issue. All the hotels and restaurants I used were conveniently located within walking distance of the dental practice.
Q: Did you enjoy any of Mexico’s entertainment or food?
The food — absolutely, as much as I could given the restrictions from my dentist on what I was able to eat during treatment.
Q: How long did your recovery take before you could travel home?
I was in Mexico for a week total — two days of dental work, a rest day, and two more days of dental work. I flew home the following day.
Q: What are some advantages of getting dental procedures in Mexico?
The price was my number one motivator, as I’m sure it is for most people who travel for dental or medical procedures. Another advantage is the speed — the entire process took less than a week, whereas in the US it would have taken months. And it’s always nice to have a change of scenery.
Q: What advice would you give someone thinking of traveling to Mexico for dental work?
Do your research and read reviews. Don’t be afraid to call the facilities you’re considering and ask questions directly. And don’t let the fear of the unknown stop you.
Q: What could the dentist have offered that would have made your experience better?
Free transportation to and from the airport, and meal vouchers would have been a nice touch.
Q: What did you like or dislike about Mexican culture?
The food. Need I say more?
Q: Would you go to Mexico for treatment again? Would you recommend it to family and friends?
I absolutely would go back if I needed more work done. I have already recommended the experience to many of my family members and friends.
